Continue to work on identifying mineral properties for each mineral in the tray. A couple students at a time, I gave each student a mineral to identify properties for to check for understanding. When identified properties for all minerals (or data tables complete), start practicing identifying minerals by dumping tray.
Cloud practical test #2 for those who want to take test a second time. After test, students will determine mineral properties for all minerals in the tray. ![]()
First, we took the clouds and weather target test. Today we talked about the remaining physical properties of minerals we will be using for identification. ![]()
Review the weather predicted with different cloud types... what weather comes with cold fronts? warm fronts? A mineral's strength or hardness number is determined by whether or not can scratch another mineral or object. It also depends on whether it gets scratched back by that mineral or object. For the minerals provided, put them in order of their strength. If the first mineral scratches the second mineral AND the second mineral can't scratch the first mineral back then... the first mineral is stronger or harder. If the first mineral scratches the second mineral AND the second mineral can scratch the first mineral back then... they have equal strength. Make sure to look for an actual scratch mark on the mineral. Sometimes some of the weaker mineral rubs off on the stronger mineral and powder mark if left behind. For the following minerals put them in order from weakest to strongest... In the field you probably would have some common materials to determine strength/hardness such as your fingernails, a penny, glass and quartz. These materials can be used to determine a relative strength or a strength/hardness number. For the following minerals determine their strength.. ![]()
First, we took the cloud practical test. If not satisfied with score, a second chance to take the cloud practical test will be on Friday, 9/04. After test, we continued identifying properties of a mineral such luster, streak, and color. We identified these properties for some of the minerals in the mineral trays. ![]()
